…in awhile. April 17, 2011 was a day that held some of New Jersey’s biggest surf all season. When was the last time you saw NJ waves this big on the beach? Contrary to the last post’s video, not all of these beasts were going to pound you. As you’ll see in the clip below, some of them just ate you. Wetsuit and all.

I had a rather hard time cooshing just one type of physician I would want to work for. So many of them fascinate me, and with me not really going into any medical field other than support, I never gave this any thought in the past. After reading the list, I am more favorable of working for a neonatologist. It is difficult to think about how neonatologist physicians sometimes have the most difficult job in the world, but I can only imagine how amazing it would be to be a part of saving a baby’s life. I had a coworker once whose baby was born at 36 weeks, and her baby had a lot of heart and lung problems. There were concerns about whether or not they would ever fully develop once she had him, but after many months in the NICU, and many scares that happened during it, the doctors were able to save him and he is now a very healthy 5 year old. It is because of that I have a higher interest in the neonatologist field.I hate to say which type of physician I would care less to work for, and it is because I worry that many will take it the wrong way. When I was 16, I used to help my mom at an assisted living home as a caregiver. We would get to work at 7:00 A.M. every morning to prepare breakfast for four of the elderly men and women that we were caring for. We would then make sure that all bedding was changed, rooms were cleaned, meals were prepared, and appointments were handled. We worked 12 hour days, and they were always grueling. The owner of the home made sure that everyone had their medicine and made it to their doctor appointments on time. However, she was more worried about getting paid for her services than actually helping the elderly. She would yell at them if they did something wrong, and even call them terrible names. My mom reported her and we both quit our job, but it has always left a sting in my heart since then. It is because of my experience with that situation that I do not think I could ever work for a gerontologist. I know that the situations would be much different, but ever since my experience with caring for elderly individuals it is very hard for me to think about assisting a physician in geriatrics because I worry that someone else might treat the elderly in the same way the owner of the home did. I am a firm believer that the elderly deserve the ultimate care and comfort when going through any treatment and aging in general, but I do not think I could ever work in that environment again.
Pics are great; Jersey standards big waves–oh my, I think I’ll stay in Hawaii—enjoy and stay safe from the “big” surf. Jump on a cheap flight, hang on the beach in Kauai and surf four sets of waves all in the same place. Inside, middle inside, outside and then beyond the reef. Come, enjoy the warmth and no wetsuit, bring your camera.
For me this is a relatively easy qeiotusn, but has a pretty complex answer. The specialty I have actually looked forward to working with is OB/GYN. I find that the ability of a woman’s body to produce a child, endure the amount of abuse it takes during a pregnancy, and the amount of pain endured during delivery is amazing. The joy of being able to be present as life enters the world is truly one of the greatest moments in life. To me that would be the best possible option. I also would love working in the operating room with a surgeon. I have experienced the OR quite a few times, and have been on both sides of the table. I have to say I would love to work with any surgeon in the OR except for Orthopedics. The reason behind that is the surgery’s are pretty brutal when it comes to the skeletal system. Having been in the OR with an Orthopedic surgeon and seeing the use of the saws, hammers and other heavy equipment in order to perform the surgery just sends chills up my spine. I know that type of surgery is not for me. I think my favorite surgeries have to be that of the abdominal cavity. The specialties that I would least like to work for are few, and for simple reasons. Pediatrics is not a specialty for me since I have four children of my own. My Aunt is a neonatal nurse practitioner and I followed her in high school and saw the good, the bad, and the ugly so I can honestly say I could not emotionally handle that type of position. Podiatry is also an area I could not see myself working. The reason behind this is pretty silly, but here goes, I very much dislike other peoples feet especially if they are not well kept. I know in the medical field you will encounter feet on a daily basis, but I could not mainly work with feet on an everyday basis. My last specialty is Orthopedics for the reasons I noted above about the barbaric nature of the surgeries and treatments for the musculoskeletal system. Its just not for me.

This reminds me of when I went to the Hamptons. It was September and I saw someone with a surf board on the beach. It had never occurred to me that even though they have access to the ocean that people in NY would surf.

Bman, in addition to uttgalirhls and light sport aircraft, sailplanes are a nice way to go in some areas. Down here in AZ, you can join a club with reasonable annual dues and sign out an aircraft to fly pretty much whenever you want. Sailplanes have a faster learning curve than powered aircraft, and experience flying sailplanes translates well into powered aircraft. You can also fly those things all day here in AZ not a drop of fuel required after release from tow.For me, flying has always been more about being in the air and less about going from point to point. In my Air Force days, I soloed in a sailplane. I was about to solo in a plane before I stopped the powered lessons (medical red tape at the time). I switched to hang gliding (referred to as free flight or foot-launched flight) for quite a few years, and that was really more my style. I liked carrying my aircraft on my back (~60 lbs) and storing it on a ladder rack in my garage. I liked understanding every single bolt on my aircraft, and I liked being able to do a truly complete pre-flight check. I liked being able to buy a brand new aircraft for less than the cost of a used car. I especially liked the feeling of complete and utter freedom while in the air. I was not in the aircraft, I WAS the aircraft. No claustrophobic cockpit. What a feeling to thermal up over 13000 feet and fly over the back of a majestic mountain range.I gave up the hang gliding when I nearly killed myself on a steep mountain launch. For those of you that don’t believe in God a near death experience followed by a miraculous save all the while KNOWING that God was in the glider with me that day would have cured me from a lifetime of atheism. I would like to emphasize that the incident was completely due to pilot stupidity, and I believe hang gliding is inherently safe as long as you are properly instructed, current, and flying within your capabilities.I still think about free flight often and long to be back in the air. I have a little powered harness that converts a hang glider into a foot-launched ultralight, and I might one day take to the skies again.

Also born and raised in Jerz and never saw anything like this. One of my fav lines in Apocalypse Now is when what’s his face says, “what the f**k do you know about surfing, private, you grew up in New Jersey!” guess that doesn’t really work after this…

Gorgeous! I don’t know why, but looking at pics of ocean waves has always been relaxing to me. I can’t even swim, but pics of surfers make me feel relaxed. Maybe it’s because they just look so in control of what they are doing and the massive waves are something you know you can’t fight, so you just have to roll with it. And the thought of just riding along and enjoying something like that seems so perfect. Thanks for sharing!

I lived for years in southern New Jersey, south of Atlantic County, but never saw these big bad boys, yet there were some nice ones after hurricanes passed off-shore. I miss that coast very much. Something tells me these waves might have something to do with the geological activity on the other side of the planet…so fasten seatbelts, and Bravo on getting your Freshly Pressed suit all wet 🙂

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. I have a bachelor’s degree in the social services field. For several years, I have worked with children who have been diagnosed with mental disorders. It is upsetting to see children victimize at an early age and even more disturbing to see them as predators as early as 5 years of age, however knowing that I am doing my part to assist them in becoming functioning youths and adults is rewarding. The empathy, confidentiality and maturity of a medical assistant are definitely needed in this area. I enjoy establishing a rapport with these clients and helping them to find adequate coping skills to deal with their disorders, therefore I would like to work for a psychiatrist.I would not like to work for an emergency physician for several reasons. I will explain a few. Patients who come to the emergency center typically have serious injuries or trauma. I would not like to have my mind constantly focused on who is coming thru the door and how sever the prognosis is. Knowing myself, I know that would be my focus and I would not be very productive. Also, in the emergency room the staff has to be prepared for anything, I would prefer an area that focuses on a particular specialty. Most importantly, I do not wish to see excessive amounts of blood loss on a regular basis. Actually, not even a minimal amount of blood loss on a regular basis. Giving my opinion and thoughts about this specialty, I would not be an effective employee.

Bman: I went to college (La Tech)to be a pilot(professional avaoiitn). I’d say chase the dream!!! The view from 3000 is phenomenal. The noise and wind inundates you. At my size the Cessna 152 is QUITE small, and very uncomfortable to fly, but as soon as the engine starts to whine, all the discomfort is forgotten. If you have any of the concerns that Jim describes, you still have powered flight options! They’re cheaper and just as fun! Buy and fly an ultralight aircraft!!!FAR 103 covers powered ultralight aircraft. There are no training, physical, or licensing rquirements.(I WOULD NOT ADVISE ANYONE TO EVER ATTEMPT TO FLY ANY AIRCRAFT WITHOUT PROPER TRAINING!!!)You could also look into light sport aircraft which was a change instituted in 2004 by FAA (courtesy of Experimental association). It doesn’t require medical approval, either. Basically, if you can get a driver license, you can get a light sport pilot license.If you dream of powered flight I can promise you’ll never regret it! As an aside (I was at the air space museum (Smithsonian) for the 100th anniversary(exact moment) of powered flight.) It was great. I met descendents of wilbur orville and more importantly Charles Taylor (any other airplane nerds know who he is? don’t cheat by googling). I found out that the wright flyer is original except for the fabric. They cut them up into pieces and gave them as souveniers, and sold some of them to continue funding flight ops.Sadly some raging assholes flew planes into the world trade center and ended my hopes of being a professional pilot, by putting many experienced pilots out of work, thus creating a backlog that’d take years to overcome flying chicken transports out of honduras at 15k a year. I had a few kids by this time (4 of 6) and couldn’t afford the paycut. I was already working as a mechanic for Delta, so I just rode that pony til I ran out of quarters.

The second photo was unexpected! I thought those waves were really a lot smaller. And when you said… they eat you I didn’t realize they actually did. The first picture has pretty colors… but my favorite is the second. (Could be the third, too)–OK lets just say I like all of the pictures!

Yep those were some pretty awesome waves. Surfers were happy that’s for sure.
I don’t know about the biggest, the ones in Storm of Century during Dec ’92 were about 30′ crashing onto Gunnison Beach up at Sandy Hook and flooded Sea Bright. No surfers though only crazy Coasties and people that had to be out that day. 🙂 Great pictures!

I just adore the breathtaking surf photo’s in NJ. They capture the atmospheric snapshot of nature at her best.Truly beautiful. This said from ‘Little Old England.’ Where we see nothing of this scale on our shore’s ever, yet!!!

I have no doubt this would be an insane amuont of information to try and assemble solo. We aint solo tho and I bet we all have particular talents/interests that could help us build a library of sorts.When I started thinking about it I wanted a hyperlink list for all the basics but quickly discovered the bulk of it is assembled into books, not online. Not all of it though as I’ve found a ton on canning, raising livestock, etc online in pdf form. County farm extensions are amazing sources of free information. I imagine there are a lot more in that vein, don’t you think?Imagine a supercategory list along the lines of Food, Power, Water, Farming, Waste, Engines, and Communications. Each Supercategory could be broken down by specialty then those delineated by type of resource, books or free information, personal knowledge, etc.The most difficult to assemble might be information on utility grids, landline phone maintanance, and public water supply. Most however, I bet we could find and continually refine if we wanted to.I agree, its a large undertaking. Its too much to ask of Brad or RD but as this blog has morphed into what it has, maybe we could do it ourselves. One last thing. I really don’t expect the world to end tomorrow,lol. I just think as we get closer to the almost certain showdown with Iran, I get nervous. As i watch the Norks and Chinese develop weapons more suited to EMP blasts than nuclear annihilation, I grow uneasy. And as I watch what will likely be another critical intervention as the Bond and debt issuance go out of control and our currency fades well, you get the idea. Ok, I’ll put away my tinfoil hat now
